The police should have the same right to protect themselves using deadly force as the citizen. Yes, you are allowed to use a firearm against an unarmed subject if you believe you are in jeopardy of serious bodily harm or death. That's the law.

As a citizen, I have the right to kill somebody that attacks me if I believe their intent is to do serious harm to me. I won't be arrested, I won't go to court, I won't go to jail. That's why Zimmerman is a free man today.

Police don't shoot suspects based on their crime, they shoot suspects based on how much of a threat they are to officers. Black or white, you can go out and kill 30 people, but if the police come and you willingly surrender, you won't get a scratch on you let alone get filled with bullets.
