There are organizations where folks recognize their heritage but they do not go around in public calling themselves hyphenated Americans.

It doesn't effect me but it does show an unpatriotic attitude on their part and questions their loyalty to America. I would never trust anyone that identified themselves to be anything other than American first.

I've never heard Rubio or Cruz say they were Cuban-Americans. As a matter of fact I've heard Rubio describe himself as an American of Cuban descent. Big difference!

I agree. When you work in health care in the ghettos you are going to acquire black friends through your work. Mine are mostly social workers, one is a doctor I worked for and he was one of the best bosses I ever had. One good friend I met in law school. She died a couple years back, and I miss her. She was one of the funniest and most brilliant people I've ever met.

You must also bear in mine that blacks consider it racist to say things like, 'some of my best friends are black.' So I won't even pretend they are my 'best friends.' My 'best friends' are the people I grew up with and I was born and raised during segregation.

I personally know many blacks and some of them are good friends.

But they ALL have one thing in common.

I'm from a German immigrant community and none of the townsfolk call themselves German-American. If the subject comes up they will say they are Americans of German ancestry.

Go to New Braunfels and ask them yourself.

I believe that it does not necessarily relate to skin color as much as culture. Blacks have a different culture than whites. Different life experiences.

If I had a community of Swedes or Germans in my neighborhood, I still probably would not hang out with them. They may look just like me, but they have a different culture and life experiences

While I do agree with the underlined, it's not everyone.

I was SHOCKED by the way I was treated by many (not all) when I lived in Virginia merely because of the color of my skin.

It all boils down to respect for all mankind.

I had a front row seat to a Whitney Houston concert in Nashville in the 80s. She was the perfect color. But she wasn't black enough for a lot of blacks.
