To unfuck all of this, we need to make several changes. Chief among them, we need to decentralize power as much as possible to make it more difficult to capture, and we need to ban all tax expenditures.

Presidents A through W run up a debt of 10 billion quadloons.
President X adds to the debt by 75 percent, meaning it is now 17.5 billion quadloons. "Record debt!", howls the opposition.
President Y adds to the debt by 100 percent, meaning it is now 35 billion quadloons. "Record debt!", howls the opposition.
Reducing deficits to zero is politically impossible in a short period, but President Z does manage to decrease deficits substantially so that he only adds 50 percent to the debt, making it 52.5 billion quadloons. "OH MY FUCKING GOD, HE'S THE WORST BIG SPENDING PRESIDENT EVAH!!!!"
Every fiscal year of Obama's Administration, he has reduced the deficit. Bush hit a record deficit of $1.4 trillion in FY2009. Obama has gone down from there every single year. No President who ever lived could have gone from a $1.4 trillion deficit to a zero deficit in seven years.
