Freedom of Religious Opinion? Not If You're Phil Robertson

As demonstrated by a guy who believes that blacks were so happy prior to the civil rights act that they didn't sing the blues (despite the fact that they INVENTED it).

Oh really? Whose running the multimillion dollar empire and whose not? Speaks for all the self proclaimed intellectuals on this board, doesn't it?

Wow, you must be strong as well as hairy. Look how fast you moved that goalpost. I am so impressed.

Sorry, but general insults on intelligence are by nature moving the goalpoasts, thanks for playing.

This isn't about the First Amendment or religious freedom. It's about how far a network will go to punish someone who won't fall into line.

The big difference is, Phil Robertson is not an actor who was hired to play a part in a television show. If that's what A&E wanted, they should have issued a casting call and done it with professionals. He can't be punished like an actor would be punished. They chose the wrong person to manipulate by ordinary means.

That has already been proven wrong, but like every braindead rightwing robot, you keep repeating it.

Actually, they can't punish him. They can use the same methods against Phil Robertson as they use against an actor that depends on the paycheck. But those methods aren't punishing Phil Robertson. It has actually turned out to punish A&E.

An actor can be replaced. Just hire a new actor. That isn't working here.

He made no mistake. Phil Robertson said exactly what he intended to say. The family has threatened to pull the show in the past over religious differences. A&E decided to work with GQ to arrange these questions in order to punish Phil Robertson for refusing to agree to the changes they wanted to make.

I grew up in the pre civil rights era. YES black people were much happier in those days, less filled with rage and resentment, less entitled. Not only that, but they were a better people with strong families and safe neighborhoods. It has long puzzled me why black people traded their integrity for a welfare check. After all, Robertson was not making a general commentary on the state of civil rights. He was expressing his personal observations as he worked in the fields side by side with black men. Those men likely went home to wives and children. Something they don't do today. If someone had asked me that same question, I would have answered it the exact same way.

You should post your picture here. No doubt you too have a Zztop beard. Congratulations.

Oh, and what of his comments about the Japanese and gays? Was he right there as well? Or just right - wing!

I have no idea what he said about the Japanese, but he was spot on with his statements about gays.

You should repeat your belief to your employer in front of his clients. I'm sure they will be pleased as punch.

It is never an insult on intelligence to call a bigot a bigot.

But as fate would have it, an employer who holds those very same views should be punished. Nice.

Funny, I was making that case yesterday.

A small amount of litter has been cleaned from the thread - please try to get back on topic, cool it on any pedo allegations.

The fact you are having to play defense proves my point, Luissa. You demonstrate all the identifiable traits of a far left liberal. I'm sorry, I'm not buying your BS today.

No I don't. Your problem is, you assume what My view point is on a lot things. Most you idiots, like Uncensored don't bother to even ask me.. Just assume.

I don't assume. Your reactions tell me all I need to know. So analytical am I, that I look for patterns, analyze behavior and speech patterns. Thus, I have never caught you at odds with a liberal on this board, but you are constantly warring with conservatives here. Simple statement of observation, Luissa. No need to lie.

You see what you want to see. And you are the one lying. ;)
You are not analytical one bit.

And like I said, your assumptions don't prove I am far left. For one I actually know what free speech means, agree that A&E has the right to fire Robertson, I don't believe in the government running are means of production, banking, etc., I don't agree with Marxism, I am not an environmentalist, Seattle leftist drive me crazy, I don't agree with Tipper Gore and her war on rappers. The only gun control I believe in is being licensed and having a back ground check.
And I work harder in one week, than you have in your life. A bum like you should never try to fool anyone into believing you have any sort of knowledge on anything other than video games.
What I do believe in, is the government shouldn't tell me what I should do with my body, what I can smoke, and who I can marry. And I think religion should stay far away from the government.
As for conservatives, I am guessing I associate with quite a bit more than you do.
Your problem is, you spend way too much time analyzing life instead of living it.

I remember Coyote saying something about "getting back on topic." This does not contribute to the subject matter of the original post.

As an aside, if you have to type an essay to prove your point, you most likely don't understand the point well enough. You are a liberal.

Back on topic.

News flash to the uninformed here that claim Robertson's 1st Amendment rights of free speech under The United States Constitution were violated.
The First Amendment protects YOU from the GOVERNMENT LIMITING your speech, NOT your employer.
It is said that most Americans have NO CLUE what the First Amendment protects.
This matter is Exhibit A of that.

Shall we continue?

What for? The premise of the OP has already been disassembled... what's the point?

I have yet to see anyone thoroughly debunk my argument. I've seen more assertions of opinion, not of fact.

Facts include:

A&E has a right under the law to suspend someone
Phil Robertson has a right to say what he wants
Both of them are not immune to the consequences

Opinions include:

Phil Robertson is a bigot and a racist.
The OP has been "disassembled."

I do believe I acknowledged that fact, sir.

I have now decided to watch no other network than A&E

I am watching it right now
