Analyst: Fall Of Baghdad Would Make Current Gas Prices ‘Look Like A Bargain’

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Oil industry analysts are warning a brewing civil war between Islamic militants in Iraq could potentially send gas prices soaring here in the Southland.

KNX 1070′s Pete Demetriou reports the price of crude oil has shot up to $107 per barrel – the highest in 10 months – on reports that soldiers with the al-Qaeda-inspired Islamic State of Iraq and Syria captured two towns in an ethnically mixed province northeast of Baghdad.

The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in Los Angeles County dropped three-tenths of a cent Friday to $4.129, its lowest since April 7, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service. While that price is nearly 13 cents more than one year ago, most experts are predicting a relatively tame 7 to 10 cents a gallon increase in the next two weeks as the summer season kicks off.

But any reduction in the flow of Iraqi crude due to the ongoing Islamic insurgency in the northern Iraq cities of Mosul and Tikrit could have worldwide economic consequences, according to oil industry analyst Phill Flynn, who said speculators are watching for the worst-case scenario.

“They think that Baghdad will not fall and that will be a more spirited defense of that city,” Flynn said. “But if it does fall and if the terrorists move further south, the price you’re paying at the pump today is gonna look like a bargain in a couple weeks.” Analyst: Fall Of Baghdad Would Make Current Gas Prices ?Look Like A Bargain? « CBS Los Angeles

Looks like the plan is working...

Not Obama's fault though................:eusa_shifty:

How would Obama benefit from rising gas prices?

Does he own a gas station or oil well?

Obama wants higher prices so it will force us to change. He wants us to change from private transportation to mass-transit.

He supports many forms of energy, but they are simply unaffordable. Obama wants these alternative energy sources to appear affordable by raising the price of all fossil fuels.

Well Barry called for energy prices to skyrocket as a result of going after nasty coal, so maybe this is part of another of his plans?

Higher oil prices would make domestic coal and gas alternatives more attractive.

The only reason oil companies can't make any money by selling in the US is because the costs the government slaps on them. They make only a fraction of what they make selling to other countries. They also can drill in other countries and not have to deal with environmentalists and the GD EPA.

If Oil Companies cannot make money selling in the USA, then why are there 2200+ oil rigs in the USA, the Largest Oil consumer on the planet?

You are confusing oil with gasoline.

Gasoline is a major product of oil refining. The reason refiners cannot make more profit in the USA is because government regulations are costly. Regardless, gasoline prices in the USA are some of the cheapest in the world. This is because we produce so much domestic oil.

I'm sure Obama wants to change that......but slowly so we won't notice the abrupt change.

Aprox. 30% of the domestic gas we buy has to be refined in other countries because of government regulations and lawsuits by environmentalists. We simply don't have the capacity to refine it fast enough or in a cost effective manner because of the left. No new refineries have been built since I was a teenager.

I'm not confusing oil with gas. The government slaps their fees and taxes on gas and because of that oil companies can't make the profit they can elsewhere. They still have to be able to price to compete with foreign oil producers who don't have the same overhead.

If you're not confusing oil with gasoline (by the way, gas = natural gas =/= gasoline), then why do you say;

The government slaps their fees and taxes on gas and because of that oil companies can't make the profit they can elsewhere.

Oil Producers are not necessarily Oil Refiners, and even within the same corporate entity, the refinery still must buy oil from there "brother" company often at market less a nominal discount.

If the value of OIL rises, with a SHORTAGE then the RAW material for gasoline manufacturing rises. OIL producers make more money.

Economics 101.

So, how many American lives per month are you willing to trade to keep your gasoline price under 4 bucks a gallon?

None, some Americans have a new invented issue to b*tch about.

Instead of every other administrative issue Obama has raised after 5 1/2 years with the buck is still passed to Bush:

1. VA mismanagement
2. Benghazi mismanagement
3. Kazakistan mismanagement
4. Taliban prisoner release

He has repeatedly told Americans He wants energy prices to soar to force you to use less and pay more. Some of the few instances where He told the truth. But liberals refused to believe Him. Which proves they (libbies) are completely backwards. They believe His lies and disbelieve His speaking the truth.

Could it possibly be genetic?

"Repeatedly?"

I suppose it wouldn't be too much to ask for a quote.....

When? Where?

If we built 100 new refineries and oil was being drilled for everywhere feasible in the US, the fact is that gas prices would NOT COME DOWN. Because the big oil companies are going to ensure they make more profits. Everyone blames this person and that but the oil companies get a free pass. Sorry, I am not buying it. They will never lower their prices. Why would they? They control everything and all those regulations people are crying about well there may be too many so let me add that if we got rid of all regulations

1). All drinking water would be contaminated WILLINGLY by big oil companies
2). Gas prices don't come down

Can't handle the truth can ya? Oh and let's thank BP for polluting the Gulf..... but blame it on regulations. Hilarious.

I don't usually link to video clips because there is often much misinterpretation between what is posted about the content, and the actual content.

I watched two videos. One had nothing to do with your contention, but the support of mass transit could be linked to lowering individual energy costs. In the other, Obama was speaking about the intent of the Carbon Tax, which he expected would increase energy costs for consumers. He seems to have a rather cavalier attitude about these rising costs that would be very much in conflict with most democratic consituants, and would severly harm the national economy.

I'm forced to agree: There is a very credable arguement supporting the theory that Obama would avoid any participation in any activity that would serve to maintain the supply of fossil fuels, and this includes those found in Iraq, or for that matter, KSA, or Canada, or anywhere else on the planet. Happily, this will be a boon for the USA producers of fossil fuels because domestic regulations can be approved or changed through legislation. Congresspeople who control these regulations depend much more upon their constituancy than a lame-duck president.
