How Do You Feel About Mandatory Voting?

Bad idea. You'd get hordes just going through the motions, voting based on whatever bullshit fallacy advertising campaign got to them first.

We already have that now -- mandatory would just intensify it.

I think that if forced to vote, more people would actually take the time to educate themselves on the issues. I think it would be harder if each party had to do more than sway their core supporters.

No they wouldn't; there's no incentive to do so. All you've done is made it mandatory to cast a vote. You go in and vote for Zippy the Pinhead, literally or figuratively, and you've served that requirement. Doesn't require any education at all to do that.
That would be their right. However, I think that more people would automatically become more engaged in the process and would stop voting against their best interests.

Very optimistic. It wouldn't happen though. There is no amount of force that could be applied to make someone care. Put the option of "I don't give a fuck" on the ballot and that would win.

Choosing to exercise your rights (or not) should always be voluntary in a free State. To suggest otherwise is the road to totalitarianism.

Then stop paying taxes. Burn your SS card. You go along with that, right? When you turn 65 it's payback time and you get a check in the mail every month. Why not also be forced to be a part of the process since you already are anyway?

Dumbest. response. ever.

You are channeling SHE WHO MUST NOT BE NAMED again.

I think jury duty is a great model for this. Most people hate jury duty. However, once they are engaged in the process they actually participate.

I think it's a little too late for the bumper stickers now, Luddly.

You can thank the Failed Messiah for that.

The same way that Democrats, nationwide, are thanking him, even as we speak.

By distancing themselves from him at the speed of light.

Abandoning the sinking ship.

Trouble is, for so many of these Democrats, it's too little, too late.

At least for now.

You know, Obama could have brought Jesus to the White House and eliminated unemployment to 0% and I can guarantee you that the narrative the right would have in 2014 would be "fail".

You are a Mitch No-Chin McConnell tool.

No, this is a terrible idea. The right NOT to vote is just as sacred as the right to vote in my veiw. I am not going to be compelled by law to vote for candidates that doesn't jive with my ideals. In every election there are several races for local, state, and sometimes national offices that I leave blank.

...Its never too late for education...
Within the narrow context of the predicted Democratic losses tomorrow... I wouldn't be too sure about that...

Can't respond to the message so attack the messenger. You must be a Republican.

If people are too lazy to go to the polls once a year, I don't WANT them voting.
Youre only one person. If forced to vote then they would also be forced to actually take a look at what they are voting on. The idea has some merit.
The idea has no merit. It is my right to vote or not to vote. The Gov't has no right to force you to vote, even though socialist libtards hate it.

That would be your right but you would still have to participate in the process or pay a fine.

I am in favour of mandatory voting after a simple test on the Constitution.

Your average voter cannot name the three branches of government, their function or their basic organization.

People like that have no business voting.

The US Constitution and our form of democracy was predicated on an educated electorate.

We no longer have that, and, as a people, still have the gall to bitch about government.

We get the government we elect, and deserve.

It has much merit.

Party affiliation should be removed from the ballot though.

A person that does not know the candidates or the issues has no business voting.

An "I am too stupid to make a choice" option should be available for those forced to vote that otherwise would not vote.

I disagree. Roughly half of the people who do vote couldn't name 3 Supreme Court justices, the Speaker of the House or their US Representative and I'd venture that 25% couldn't name the Vice President.
What makes you think those so apathetic that they don't even make it to the polls would be any better informed?

Exactly. If our public education system incorporated real civil and social studies, we could prepare kids from kindergarten on up about the process and their role in it.

As it stands idiots like Louie Gohmert and Michael Grimm end up on congressional investigation committees and illustrate that some public school systems don't teach either at all.

Something only a fascist Libtard would come up with! Against everything this country stands for.
Jury duty.

Voir dire. It overcomes mandatory jury duty by a mile.

Mandatory jury duty is a terrible idea. For one thing it isn't so mandatory that a clever person can't get out of it. For another a jurist vows to be impartial whereas voting is partial by the very nature of the activity.

Voting is a civic responsibility, as is being an INFORMED voter.

Remove party affiliation, and require a basic literacy test, and I am all for mandatory voting.

It all went downhill when it began to be called "Social Studies", instead of History, Geography, Government, etc.

It would get the money out of politics. But these pinheads here don't get that. They prefer for big money interests to call the shots in this country. They call that democracy.
