If slavery wasn't wanted, it would not have happened.

Slavery was a normal and accepted thing throughout mankind's history. Wilburforce was the moving force to ban it from first England, then the British Empire between 1833 and 1839, France banned slavery in 1848, Spain banned slavery in 1873. Portugal banned slavery in 1869 under pressure from Great Britain and the USA. The USA was kind of in the middle when it came to banning slavery. The USA and Great Britain were in the forefront of banning the slave trade. The slave states in the deep south exerted every ounce of pressure they could bring to bear on any attempts by the northern states to ban or even limit slavery in the USA.

Thanks to the three fifths compromise the slave states forced into existence, the slave states controlled the Federal Government via the census until the mid 1850s when northern immigration finally overcame the advantage the slaves gave to the slave holding states. Ten of the first fifteen presidents were either slave owners themselves or pro-slavery and during that time the slave states had uncontested control of the House or Representatives and often a plurality in the Senate.
