Is Home-Schooling a Fundamental Right?

no matter how much you pretend not all kids can be home schooled

But all kids can be schooled in a positive teaching environment in which the teachers and parents are a unified force sharing the same values and appreciation for concepts of education. It is obvious from the studies and research I and others have posted, that the big, impersonal government school district that ignores parental values and isn't demanding excellence in education isn't getting the job done.

The private and parochial schools do much better even when class sizes are larger.

And homeschoolers are doing the best job of all.

Becuase they can kick any kids they want to OUT of the sytstem

home schooled kids get alot of one on one teacher contact

then you should promote homeschooling....

and think of the $$$ we would save.....!

1. What about ‘socialization’? ‘Dr. Raymond Moore, author of over 60 books and articles on human development: "The idea that children need to be around many other youngsters in order to be 'socialized,'" Dr. Moore writes, "is perhaps the most dangerous and extravagant myth in education and child rearing today." Moore concluded that, contrary to popular belief, children are best socialized by parents -- not other children.” "There is no basis to question the social development of homeschooled children."’ K - 12 - FamilyEducation.com

2. But are home-schoolers really being educated? In a study of over 5,000 home-schooled students, they outperformed public school students by 30 to 37 percentile point in all subjects (from “Strengths of Their Own-Home Schoolers Across America,” Dr. Brian D. Ray)

3. Recent statistics from The College Board and the American College Testing Program (ACT) indicate that home schoolers are exceeding the national average test scores on both the SAT and the ACT college entrance exams. In 1999, the 2219 students who identified themselves as home schooled students on the SAT test, scored an average of 1083 (verbal 548, math 535), 67 points above the national average of 1016. A perfect SAT score is 1600. Also in 1999, 3616 home school students taking the ACT scored an average of 22.7, compared to the national average of 21, a perfect score being 36.

Yes smaller class sizes are good for education.

Now vote for the funds to make it happen

that is not a study

It sure was interesting....

It included this:

"Scholastic education aside, what about moral education? Public schools are teaching high schoolers proper condom usage, while staying away from such alternatives as chastity. Pro-homosexuality and anti-gun sentiments are being hurrahed in schools, yet prayer is banned. School nurses tell parents that children are not required to receive permission before obtaining abortion referrals through the school. Any aspect of moral education has been wiped out and replaced with an "if it feels good, do it" mentality. As a result, the rebellious attitude and scholastic disinterest of today’s youth are fostered by a permissive and indulgent educational system."
You agree, don't you?

That did not occur in our school system, PC.

Immaterial.

every child has a right to learn about the world.

Its child abuse to teach them lies

Then perhaps some of the teachers my daughter had, in public school, should be fired and charged with child abuse. It was a good thing I pulled her out and sent her to a private school.

It'd be interesting to see a study on home schooled vs public school on areas besides academics, like social skills and preparedness for college.

"Galloway (1995) concludes that homeschoolers and traditionally educated students demonstrate similar academic preparedness for college and academic achievement. And according to Rudner (1999), achievement test scores of homeschooled students are high. The students' average scores were typicality in the 70th to 80th percentile, with 25% of homeschool students enrolled one or more grades above their age-level peers in public and private schools. Christopher Klicka, Senior Counsel for the Home School Legal Defense Association, reports that homeschoolers tend to score above the national average on both the SAT and ACT, the primary tests used by colleges in evaluating college applicants. A study of 2219 students who reported their homeschooled status on the SAT in 1999 showed that these students scored an average of 1083--67 points above the national average of 1016; similarly, the 3616 homeschooled students who took the ACT scored an average of 22.7--1.7 points above the national average of 21 (Klicka, 2002)."

o_O

As for socialization, I have up close and personal experience with roughly 400 home schooled kids on a regular basis through a program sponsored by our church. And also my own family member who has been home schooled.

These kids are smart, talented, and because their schooling is so efficient and effective, they have extra time left over to engage in the arts, music, science fairs, theater, and other creative pursuits. My homeschooled nephew and many of his friends are avid rodeo people. They are far less likely to become pregnant before marriage, far less likely to experiment with illegal substances, far less likely to get in trouble with the law. We have already posted evidence that they graduate HS at a higher rate, go to college at a higher rate, and generally score higher on proficiency exams than their counterparts from the public school system.

Almost without exception, they are all outgoing, socially savvy, have multitudes of friends and companions to do things with, and adapt quite easily to the higher academic settings after they leave home.

Will California Outlaw Homeschooling?

In San Leandro, also in the same county, one family who removed their child from public school was threatened with a truancy investigation unless they enroll in the public school ISP. The school district office, using taxpayer money to pursue law-abiding families, has retained a law firm to back up their claim that homeschoolers establishing home based private schools are truant. Earlier this year, San Leandro’s harassment of another homeschooling family resulted in the mother being pepper sprayed in front of her 10 year old son during her arrest. Also in Berkeley, Child Protective Services took custody of twin boys from a single mother for the offense of "isolation due to homeschooling." In Los Osos, in San Luis Obispo County, a single mother on welfare has had her right to homeschool threatened despite the child’s attendance and successful record at the local community college.

Clearly, school district bureaucrats are increasing the pressure on homeschoolers in an attempt to restrict independent homeschooling.

Contumacious makes good sense here.

Nonetheless, if the lady got pepper sprayed, she was creating a public disturbance. Just because one disagrees with how the police are performing their duties does not give said individual the right to cause a public disturbance.

Funny how these libs need their lies pointed out to them.

The USA already outspends every other country per student except for Switzerland which is comparable to us. Finland spends about a third as much per student as we do but ranks near the top in their kids achieving math and science proficiency while the USA ranks way down there.

It would appear that money is not the problem. Money propping up failure only encourages more failure.
