Our New Speaker Thinks the Earth is 6,000 Years Old

A person who has eschewed all of their critical thinking skills in favor of an ideology.

Ideologies can do that to people. A cautionary tale.

how does believing in creationism imply removal of all critical thinking?

That means believers can't think critically between walking over a bridge or falling down into the chasm spanned by it?

Blind faith. We KNOW the earth isn't 6,000 years old.

Actually we don't. None of us were around for it, and all the evidence to the contrary is derived evidence.

Hell, some people, scientific people, theorize our existence is a simulation.

It's a pretty good indication actually, and not that tiny.

Again, Women having penises in intellectualism? Lowering the plebes standard of living due to AGW is intellectualism?

Foisting non mature technology on people via law is smart?
Conservatives view on science is that their opinions are just as valid as those of the scientists who have spent their entire careers dedicated to advancing human knowledge.

Sure you have a PhD working in a team with other researchers on a topic for decades but Jim Bob doesn’t think you’re right so we just don’t know.

Conservatism devalues science and the product so why would a scientist want to be a part of that culture?

Theres a lot more to it than that, but it’s a start.

Conservatives view is that scientists have no more agency on POLITICAL implications of their scientific positions than anyone else. They are experts in their field maybe, but that doesn't give them override on what we do about it.

I have a Masters in Chemical Engineering. As an Engineer I am far more cognizant of the real world impacts of anything than a PHd that spends their time in a lab doing lab scale work or playing with models all the time.

We dismiss automatic acceptance of socialism being the only solution to problems.

Ah, bullshit.

During COVID, epidemiologists were saying this was far worse than any other we’d seen in modern times, to which conservatives replied that it wasn’t because when they got COVID they didn’t really get sick so it’s not bad.

Total bullshit.

They were wrong. In the beginning they thought it had a 3-4% mortality rate, and acted accordingly. Once it was seen to be far lower than that, they didn't change their tune, because by that point the politicians took over and they realized they had a newfangled way of controlling things.

COVID wasn't as bad as SARS, it was just easier to get, so your modern time reference is bullshit, nevermind the Spanish Flu in 1919.

The conservative reply to MMGW has shifted in the last few decades from:

1. the earth isn’t warming.
2. okay the earth is warming but it’ll start cooling soon
3. okay it’s not cooling soon but it’s not man made
4. okay it’s man made but there’s nothing we can do about it anymore because it’s too late.
I have never expressed any of those thoughts, Simp.

MMGW is a sham.

Well, this is reassuring.

The new Speaker appears to believe that the Earth is 6,000 years old.

Before arriving in Washington less than a decade ago, House Speaker Mike Johnson, a deeply religious Christian, was a legal crusader associated with a fringe evangelical movement called “young Earth creationism,” based on a literal reading of the Bible’s Book of Genesis that posits the Earth is only several thousand years old.
In the mere hours since Johnson was elected speaker Wednesday, he hadn’t had to address his views on creationism and evolution. But his close ties to a leader of the creationist movement and his past legal work — on behalf of the Ark Encounter creationist theme park, where children can learn that dinosaurs were passengers on Noah’s Ark — seem to suggest that he’s also personally aligned with these beliefs.

“The Ark Encounter is one way to bring people to this recognition of the truth, that what we read in the Bible are actual historical events,” Johnson said in a 2021 interview with Ark Encounter founder Ken Ham while guest-hosting the radio showof Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, an evangelical activist group.

He did legal work for the people who own the Ark Encounters site is your argument? How about their plumber. Is he also a creationist?

The Spanish Flu wasn’t during modern times, certainly not medically speaking. COVID is way worse than SARS precisely because it is way worse.

Conservatives trashed medical institutions and scientific processes because they didn’t like the implications. They didn’t want to believe COVID was a problem. They wanted to believe it was a conspiracy to “get Trump”. They still do. Even now you see people say it was just like the flu.

That’s why conservatism is anti-science.

I'm a fan of evolution and carbon dating and all that, I just don't look down on those who don't.
Of course not. Because on one side you have decades of careful scientific work and on the other side you have Jim Bob who doesn’t know anything about carbon dating but thinks its wrong.

We have to treat those equally.
