Putin's Historic Miscalculation May Make Him a War Criminal

View attachment 607107

In the eyes of the world and almost certainly history, Vladimir Putinā€™s invasion of Ukraine on Thursday was an epic miscalculation, drawing comparisons to Adolf Hitler and Saddam Hussein for cold-blooded aggression that could challenge the world order and change its borders. The Russian leader appeared almost delusional in a pre-dawn speech from the Kremlin announcing a ā€œspecial military operationā€ to ā€œprotectā€ Donbas, the eastern region where Russian-backed separatists have waged a war for eight years. Putin, instead, immediately ordered Russian tanks into Ukraine and air strikes on the capital and more than a dozen cities in a country of forty million people. ā€œPeace on our continent has been shattered,ā€ the nato secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg told reporters. ā€œWe now have war in Europe on a scale and of a type we thought belonged to history.ā€ Putinā€™s ā€œrecklessā€ attack risks ā€œcountless innocent lives,ā€ Stoltenberg warned.

Putin is now, at minimum, a pariah condemned by leaders across the world. ā€œPutin is the aggressor. Putin chose this war,ā€ President Biden said in a speech to the nation announcing new sanctions on Russian financial institutions and Ć©lites. He charged that Putin ā€œhas much larger ambitions than Ukraine.ā€ ā€œHe wants to, in fact, reĆ«stablish the former Soviet Union,ā€ Biden said. ā€œHis ambitions are completely contrary to the place where the rest of the world has arrived.ā€ In one of a flurry of statements reflecting outrage globally, the European Commission chief, Ursula von der Leyen, called Russiaā€™s act ā€œbarbaricā€ and dismissed its justifications as ā€œcynical.ā€ In a tweet, the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, said he was appalled by Putinā€™s ā€œhorrificā€ decision to pursue ā€œa path of bloodshed and destruction.ā€ Putinā€™s military offensive put him on the diplomatic defensive. The French President, Emmanuel Macron, called the attack ā€œa turning pointā€ in history that will have a profound and lasting impact across the continent.

Putin may now also qualify as a war criminal, according to the Geneva Conventions of 1949. War crimes include willful killing and extensive destruction of property ā€œnot justified by military necessity and carried out unlawfully and wantonly.ā€ The term has been inconsistently interpreted and unevenly applied to leaders or countriesā€”including to the U.S. and its officialsā€”who have initiated aggression for reasons considered unjustified. In Ukraine, Putinā€™s ā€œwar of choiceā€ has clearly violated international law through his invasion of a sovereign country and attempt to oust its government. After an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting, on Wednesday, the Secretary-General, AntĆ³nio Guterres, warned that the Russian invasion could be the ā€œworst warā€ of the century ā€œwith consequences not only devastating for Ukraine, not only tragic for the Russian Federationā€ but for the entire world.

I totally agree. The above article was written by Robin Wright - a smart lady. What do you think?
okā€¦so? folks have been warning dems about him since 2008, but the demafascist played right into his handsā€¦ā€resettingā€ relations, after Bush sent him running when he tried to do this to Georgia, promising to be more flexible, after helping them in 2012 election, and then turning a blind eye to their first conquest in ukraine in 2014, and now this

China officially dumped Russia a couple of days ago. China is one of the oldest civilizations on this planet that lasted through five thousand years. I don't think they cared for that kind of aggression. They think that Biden the Russian is hitting on his relatives in the Ukraine, many of whom are Russians one or two generations removed.
No, China has not dumped Russia. They have made some token gestures, even those are weak.

Who's supporting Putin here? Or are you gaslighting?
I was thinking the same thing. I've not seen people supporting putin in these threads. I guess if you don't immediately come out with angry words toward putin, that means you are supporting him.

That the reprehensible right supports and defends a murderous dictator and war criminal comes as no surprise.
Who supports him? Who defends him? Show us where this is happening? All the threads I've read show everybody saying how wrong this is.

Your "projection" responses are humorous - and predictable. Putin and Trump are the lovebirds.
Only in your Ruskie Propagandist mind, Comrade!

Right now, the only thing that will stop the Russkies is going to be ordering the ICBMs and SLBMs. Imagine a Minuteman III shoved way up Putin's ass? but Joe Potatohead won't give the order.
God stops Gog on The Mountains of Israel!

More like an invasion of Ukraine is a crime against peace, initiating aggressive war, from which all other crimes follow. Very much like the US' invasion of Iraq.

History will clearly reflect that Trump and his NaziCon supporters emboldened Putin to invade Ukraine. I'm just surprised that Putin was dumb enough to take the bait.
History will reflect the broken promises of the US, where it attempted to push NATO up to Russia's border and its attempted regime change in Ukraine in order to use it as a stalking horse for Russian containment will be seen in the same light as the Treaty of Versailles in provoking Russian revanchism.

So far, and things can change, Putin has a lower kill count (civilian or military) than Bush and Obama.
Putin's mistake was underestimating the European continent's reaction to and defense of a sister nation's rape.

Bush did the same thing when he invaded Iraq. Of course that was clean break strategy.
