WASHINGTON, Aug 20 (Reuters) - The FBI has found scant evidence that the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol was the result of an organized plot to overturn the presidential election result, according to four current and former law enforcement officials.

Though federal officials have arrested more than 570 alleged participants, the FBI at this point believes the violence was not centrally coordinated by far-right groups or prominent supporters of then-President Donald Trump, according to the sources, who have been either directly involved in or briefed regularly on the wide-ranging investigations.


"Ninety to ninety-five percent of these are one-off cases," said a former senior law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation. "Then you have five percent, maybe, of these militia groups that were more closely organized. While her motives are unclear, Rep. Cheney has chosen to go "off the reservation" with respect to all matters Trump. This is why Madam Pelosi ignored the nominations of the Republican leader and chose Cheney for the committee, thus supporting a specious claim that it is a "bi-partisan" committee.

Nobody is buying that of course.

While what President Trump and his supporters were trying to do on January 6th was unprecedented, it is entirely consistent with American principles of law and order. When a decision has been made that is arguably flawed, we take a step back and look closer before finalizing the decision. Had the Republicans done similar things to win, the Democrats certainly would have tried their own set of outrageous measures to prevent certification of the election, or at least delay it pending some sort of review.

Surely a case can be made that some of Trump's actions violated one law or another, but that is still a long way from an indictment, trial, and conviction. Indeed there is zero chance of any of that happening.

On the other hand, as more and more "irregularities" come to light about how this past election was conducted, Trump's actions seem more and more justifiable to any observers who are not blinded by partisan obtuseness. For one thing, had a certain billionaire not illegally intervened with mountains of money to troll the ghettos for votes, the outcome would have been the opposite. Among many other irregularities, mostly obscured by Pandemic paranoia, real and invented.
