Can anyone explain why this wasn't the giant sized lie that eventually led to the war in Iraq? Is there a compelling reason why Bush should be forgiven for telling this lie? Does anyone even dispute the lie?

The claim was that Iraq had those WMD's and at the same time had a connection and working relationship with al Qaeda, the group that had attacked us and vowed to attack us again. North Korea had WMD's and so did Syria. There were other counties well known to have had WMD's and at the same time known to have relationships with terrorist. Bush claimed a relationship with al Qaeda and Saddam. Without that relationship Iraq was just another bad player. It was that claim that Saddam worked with al Qaeda that got everyone's attention and support for the war.
This isn't complicated. Bush said Saddam was connected with aiding and protecting al Qaeda. Where is the evidence that that was a true statement?
