I've seen a lot of material on how it doesn't even pay to have the Olympics. Guessing the bureaucrats do it because they like to look good. They like to hob nob. Companies like it to make money. The taxpayers end up footing the bill long after the politicians are gone (and/or dead).

This was the most successful and profitable Olympics in decades. Great competition. Great setting. Tight broadcast. Huge ratings.

Well, hopefully the IOC is reading the writing on the wall. The reason both cities (Paris and LA) were awarded the games on the same day was because they leveraged the fact that there wasn’t a huge amount of interest in hosting the games.
