As far as the worst presidents, the #1 spot definitely goes to Buchanan. He let the South secede and he did absolutely nothing about it.
#2 and #3 are a toss up between Nixon and Andrew Johnson -- both faced impeachment.
#4 and #5 goes to Carter and/or Hoover for ineptitude and impotence.
The other presidents were probably fine.
As for the very best presidents, Lincoln is clearly without any doubt #1.
#2 best is probably FDR.
Both Lincoln and FDR shepherded the USA through huge wars.
Kennedy probably deserves #3 for shepherding us through the Cuban/Russian missile crisis.
LBJ and BHO are being given a lot of credit for their Medicare and ACA programs and they deserve it.
Although each one was inept at foreign warfare, they did other things that helped a lot of people.
