While what happened to those people in Syria is tragic, it is not our fight and never has been. Nowhere in the Constitution does it say our military is to be used as the guardian of the planet and a lot of people in this country are getting sick of it. Aside from Afghanistan, we haven't fought one war in the defense of our nation since WWII. Every other war we have entered into has been a choice to fight someone else's and countless lives have been lost over the years.

Furthermore, we have been interfering in the affairs of the Middle East for over 70 years and all we've done is make things worse. We are responsible for the rise of Khomeini in Iran. We are responsible for the existence of ISIS in Iraq and we will be responsible for which ever radical Muslim extremist takes over Syria if we depose Assad. These people have been slaughtering each other for 5,000 years and we aren't going to change it. All we have had done is made ourselves a terrorist target and watched our civil liberties and Constitutional rights erode as a result.

That depends on whether you believe that morality is restricted to those who immediately effect you. I do understand your point though. I am conflicted.

The rules say you should go to congress first.

But congress have allowed the prez to do whatever going back to at least Reagan days .

Congress doesn't have the Balls to make the decision, so they look the other way.

Syria is not isolated. The reason Clinton ignored Rwanda was that there was no American interest there. Yet, Syria exports terrorism and Iran is their ally.

What happened to Hamlet was tragic, but what is happening in Syria is an offense to any sense of decency we may have. And what is happening in Syria does directly effect the US and its allies. Because of the wars in Syria and Iraq Europe is being flooded with refugees who are already threatening to bring down the EU, and if this fighting spreads to the Gulf oil states it will negatively effect the global economy and that will negatively effect the US economy. What will our options be then? Much worse than they are now.

Attacking Afghanistan wasn't a defensive war. Afghans never attacked us. It's like attacking Italy because the Mafia import drugs into the US.

"but what is happening in Syria is an offense to any sense of decency we may have."

Where has this um decency been during the Darfur Genocide, why didn't you bomb Sudan to STOP the 250,000 plus people INCLUDING children and babies in Darfur being hacked to death by machetes?

OR does your decency ONLY apply to um "Protecting Your Interest" in the Middle East?

"And what is happening in Syria does directly effect the US and its allies. Because of the wars in Syria and Iraq Europe is being flooded with refugees"

So explain WHY the "poor refugees" are also coming from Morocco, Pakistan, Tunisia, Nigeria, Eritrea, Sri Lanka, Algeria, DR Congo etc WHAT do ALL of those nations have to do with what's happening in Syria and Iraq? When for example were for example Sri Lanka and Nigeria geographically EVER EVEN in the Middle East?

Never that's when.

I'm conflicted as well. Personally I say we let the idiots kill each other anyway they see fit and tend to our own, but the world looks to us to lead some moral fight they cannot. What should we do in the case of chemical attacks on the citizenry of a foreign nation?

I do find it amusing, after all the libs cry that we should let any foreigner in and take care of them like pets, but apparently only when they illegally enter our nation's borders... Out side the borders, fuck em... unless their hearts find something to cry about? IDK it's all very confusing what's coming from the left spectrum these days, a mishmash of conflicting ideals.

The right seems pretty set against getting involved, but the general vibe is that this particular attack was 'necessary'

~shrug~

That depends on whether you believe that morality is restricted to those who immediately effect you.
The US military does not exist to inflict morality on the world. It exists to defend the American people from aggression. Woodrow Wilson destroyed its purpose when he made the deal to enter America on the side of Great Britain in WWI.

It is very clear that constant war abroad leads to less freedom at home. Most Americans don't know this fundamental truth.

Using the Constitution to denigrate military intervention, does not work. The Constitution has long been ignored and is no longer the law of the land.

I seriously doubt the US is responsible for Khomeini or any other ME issue really. Religion and tribalism has dominated that region and uniting them into nations is the result of tyrants rising. The common man in those places are little more than property of the wealthy and powerful.

Syria is right where one might expect it to be in today's world. ISIS was over running it and Russia needs it to be a stable environment for use as a port city on the ocean. Naturally they sided with Assad to fight ISIS. Assad then understandably used that assistance to rid himself of adversaries trying to unseat him.

The only thing I think we could have done differently is assist Russia in defeating ISIS more directly while Obama was in office. At a million dollars a cruise missile, I think we wasted money and effort in a fight that is not ours.

Reread his post. He said "aside from Afghanistan".
