White House calls for increased grid spending

If the other forms of electricity are cheaper than coal why do they pay more for it?

Because the transition from older to newer forms of electricity production involves manufacturing and installations - which aren't cheap.

A single marine turbine can cost US$10 million, plus it needs to be set up and linked to the grid.

However, as these are non-recurring costs, this is not an issue after the phase-in period.

Really? How long will a marine turbine last?

why is it always "The "White House says...?", "The White House does...?", "The White House this", "The White House that".

everyone knows, or should know.., that building just sits there, does nothing, says nothing.., it is the filthy scumbag regime who currently lives there (read, trashes) who does all the talking and doing.

White House calls for increased grid spending

NEW YORK (AP) — The cost of weather-related power outages is high and rising as storms grow more severe and the U.S. electric grid gets older, according to an Obama Administration report that calls for increased spending on the nation's electric power system.

Power outages cost the economy $18 billion to $33 billion per year, according to the report, a figure that has been rising steadily over the past 20 years. That can rise to $40 billion to $75 billion in years with severe storms such as 2008's Hurricane Ike and last year's Superstorm Sandy.

I agree. Let's build some nuclear power plants to go with that wind, solar and wave ;) Obama has the right idea on this...
I love it! It's music to my ears. I'm an electrical engineer and that's job security, baby. The more electrical projects, the better. I need to pay rent. So, gimme some!

Better idea, get the government out of the electric grid completely.

Good idea. Lets' make us all dependent on Enron?!! The private sector is always honest, fair, above board and perfect. Right?

If you don't like shopping at WalMart you can go to The Container Store.

If you don't like shopping at your government you can shop at your government.

Keep telling yourself that. Meantime, the US will build inexpensive gas fired antique plants that are less expensive to build, cleaner, and don't die if the wind stops blowing.

By the way, if you think that is a non recurring cost you must also believe in magic.

What the hell is "advanced coal?" Current coal fired power plants are far cheaper than wind power. Furthermore, Every kilowatt of wind power requires a 100% backup from a coal fired power plant, so the cost of wind has to include the cost of coal.
Advanced Coal = Clean Coal.

It is considerably more expensive than wind energy, thus it is not really a player.

Most countries which utilise a great deal of wind will use nuclear or hydro as the work horses.

btw. Keep in mind that when we talk about solar, Solar Photovoltaic is only one option, and not the latest technology - Solar Thermal maybe become a massive source of electricity during the next 20 years.

Clean cola? Is that like the smart power in Obama's foreign policy?

Which means coal with no CO2. Of course that's a joke, but whose comparing wind power with a fantasy? Conventional coal is cheap, and "clean coal" isn't required except in the fantasies of eco-nutburgers.

You mean like Germany which is adding 20 coal fired power plants?

Solar Thermal is another fantasy that would require 100% from coal fired power plants.

Lucikly, there are some Americans who do not live in 1956.

This is an article about Solar Thermal in your own country. It's up, it's running, and you learned about it right here, from someone in Finland.

"The Mojave Desert is blooming. Construction crews are erecting mirrors —each measuring 70 square feet—at a rate of 500 per day across some 3,500 acres. When completed in late 2013, the $2.2 billion Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System—the largest of its type in the world—will power 140,000 California homes.

Unlike photovoltaic technology, which converts solar radiation directly into electricity, the Ivanpah facility generates heat. More than 170,000 mirrors will gather tremendous amounts of sunlight and focus it on three towers filled with water, raising temperatures to more than 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit and producing steam that spins turbines that generate electricity. The Oakland-based company BrightSource Energy, which is overseeing construction by the Bechtel corporation, says that using sunlight instead of fossil fuels to power the turbines will reduce carbon emissions by more than 400,000 tons annually. The desert region—thanks to its elevation and clear, dry air—receives reliable sunlight 330 to 350 days per year."

Actually, it is opening six new clean coal plants this year, while closing the country's nuclear plants. Older coal stations are being closed.

I think they are wrong, but that's Conservative government for you!! At least they aren't backward enough to deny climate change!

Solar thermal is not going to go anywhere unless the US drops a lot of environmental regulations.
