Trump made misstep after misstep but his response was to always downplay the virus. He never understood the basic concept, beat the virus and the economy will recover.

Reading a few quotes by Trump, he stated he downplayed it true. Now, the motive for downplaying it is what we're debating imo, and likely we won't agree but the desire to see a glass half full, even when most see it as half empty is something I relate, albeit not always successful when a situation is in dire straits. Yes, the pandemic was bad and Trump knew it. His motive to downplay it, according to his words not my own take, was to prevent massive panic. I don't know about your neck of the woods, but I've seen people in settings where they thought they weren't going to find toilet paper and almost having strokes lol We Americans can do "panic mode" pretty darn well....unfortunately quite the defect.
