I don't know about that. A lot of pro athletes drink in the present day too.

Prince Fielder was a tremendous player in the current era and was a lot bigger than Ruth.

Pete Rose was probably the all time greatest. He played infield and outfield, tremendous number of hits. He looked like a ball player.

He was good, but his .302 lifetime batting average disqualifies him. Doesn't compare with guys like Ruth, Gehrig, Williams, Musial.

you would have to go by decade......the guys in the dead ball era had different playing conditions than the guys in later years.....Ruth was the only guy in the 20's who figured out how to hit a homer, the guys in the 30's had much better competition, the 40's had WW2 fuck that decade up...the 50's it was now integrated so competition was better there....after that decade pitching started getting better and they started using relief pitchers more and more..... equipment was now getting better and the players were getting better and more competitive with money starting to be a factor in that competition.....

How many times did Ryan win over 20 games? How many times was his ERA as low as 1.75 or 2.01?
