Daily trivia Tournament

How the heck are you supposed to know which team the Dallas Stars were going to play on Nov. 15 in whatever year this quiz question was submitted?

I also have on my desk a schedule for my favorite hockey team, the Dallas Stars. Since this quiz is based on today, November 15, I want to know what team will be opposing the Stars tonight when they play at the American Airlines Center in Dallas?

I had that same question...

the key was to recognize that the incorrect answers were obviously made-up names...

the correct answer was the Denver whatevers...

btw, I know practically nothing about hockey...

The others were made up?

I didn't know. I guessed without thinking too much about it. I guessed correctly but no guarantee I'll remember the right one next time it comes up.

Add NHL team names to my list of things to study. Along with birthstones, astrological signs, Eastern European capitols, Disney movies, racing flags, the countries of Africa, ........

:scared1:

1. Amelia (132 points, 14 wins)
2. bayoubill (131 points, 12 wins)
3. deaddogseye (125 points, 3 wins)
4. hortysir (108 points, 0 wins)
5. Darkwind (29 points, 0 wins)

I can neither log in nor register again. I'll try after my computer guy comes by next week.

Hmmmm

Example of a word with long-E?

The first example which came to mind for me was "me llamo" which I would pronounce like "may yahmo".

I was thinking of the way the double-L sounds in the Spanish version of my name...

Guillermo...

sounds like a long E to me...

I can see how "Y" could be considered the correct answer... but I refuse to believe that "E" is an incorrect answer...

to avoid such confusion, the person who wrote the quiz question should not have included both "E" and "Y" as possible answers...

I pronounce Guillermo as "Guee-yair-mo."

For me the 'i' gets the long E sound.

The 'll' is still 'y'.

:dunno:

I'd do it "Guee-air-mo"...

btw, when folks say my name in a hurry, it often comes out "WEE-yum"...

with the long E taking the place of the double L...

and the "y" in this case taking the place of the "i"...

ok -- so i understand how the score each day is arrived at but i dont understand how the points award is made.

Like yesterday, i got all 10 and got 6 points and someone else got all 10 and got 5. other days two people will get 10 right and both get the same point award. Still other days one person might get 10 and another get 9 and be slower and they both get 5 points .

i assume it has something to do with time and the number of players (what else could it be?) but i havent been able to quantify it -- not that ive really tried. i take the easier path -- I ask you guys.

Your quiz score is based on number of questions correct and elapsed time...

the quiz score is calculated as follows:

you get 100 points for each correct answer, with a theoretical maximum of 1000 for a ten-question quiz...

from that number is subtracted the number of seconds it took for you to finish the quiz...
i.e., one point is subtracted for each second it took to finish the quiz...

that gives you your quiz score...

your quiz score is then compared with the quiz scores of other players to determine how you place in the "Score" listings for that day's quiz (first, second, third, etc...)

"Award" points are then based on how you place in the day's "Score" listings (first, second, third, etc...)

As you may have already noticed... when there's only a few players, there's hardly any difference in "Award" points given to the highest and lowest scorers... which does seem kinda goofy...

however, as the number of players increases, the difference between "Award" points for highest and lowest scorers significantly increases...

not sure why it's set up this way...

I recall someone suggesting that it's to encourage us to bring in more people to play...
