David Dukey has been, and still is, a racist and bigot. Although his target tends to be Jews more than race. That's number one, and it's a constant.

Throughout each one he has been a Democrat, a Republican and a Nazi at the least. These were/are all vehicles to an end, usually an election. That's number two and it changes with the situation.

Number one and number two have zero to do with each other. The first is his nature, the second is which vehicle he takes to get somewhere. Moreover he (or anyone) would have no need of a political party in number two in order to arrive at number one. Number one is the STARTING POINT.

Number two, the political party, was adopted and/or changed as necessary in order to bolster his chances in said elections. In the 1970s he figured his chances would be better as a Democrat given the local voting patterns. In the 1980s he figured Republican would resonate better, again according to the changing voting patterns. Same guy, same agenda.

Duke's rival Buddy Roemer, who had served in the state legislature after being elected there as a Democrat, ran as a Republican in 1991. Once again -- same guy, same gig. And once again, switched for the same reason.

This is a simple political bet-hedging to give oneself the best chance for votes. If you run for Senator in Wyoming you either run as a Republican or you lose. Simple truism. If you run for mayor of most cities you'd better run as a Democrat or you lose. Just ask Frank Rizzo or Ray Nagin.

Jim Justice ran for governor of West Virginia as a Democrat and then switched to Republican when the D label had done its job. Same guy, same gig. Arlen Specter switched from Republican to Democrat when he thought it would improve his chances to hang around. Again, same guy, same gig.

The local sheriff in my town runs variously as a Democrat or as a Republican, depending on what winds he sniffs in the air. AGAIN ---- same guy, same gig.

I know this will come as a blinding revelation but appending the name of this or that political party in no way transmogrifies personalities into something they were not two minutes before. That's fucking absurd.

I for one don't believe they believe these mythologies. I think they simply keep yammering the same discredited fables over and over and over on the theory that enough people will stop by who are really not paying attention, and they'll convince them of the mythology. Case in point, every time I've corrected Stuporgirl with the actual Klan history, complete with names and dates and places, she comes right back with a cut-n-paste of the same fable I just took to the cleaners, as if it's not sitting right there on the same page. See for example yesterday where I corrected her AGAIN on the same topic AGAIN and four minutes later in post 120 she again posted the same busted fable that was utterly discredited two posts prior.

It is a remarkable exercise in self-delusion. Based on a mortal fear of facing the prospect that they could be --- horrors --- WRONG and unable to find the intestinal fortitude to admit to it. Or in this case even to slither away and revise one's story in secret.
