THOUGHTS FROM AN INDEPENDENT

It's crystal clear that Senators Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham are eager to sweep this Senate impeachment trial under the rug, shut it down, and allow no new evidence or witnesses. But what happens if they try to do that? Will other Republican Senators march in lockstep, and try to deal with the coming election fallout in November? Will they break ranks and join the Democrats in insisting documents and witnesses being suppressed by President Trump be revealed? Recent polling shows:

71% of Democrats, 56% of Independents and 40% of Republicans say Senate should call additional witnesses to testify.

51% say Senate should remove Trump from office.

Either way, Senate Republicans are in a tough spot. Do they cave in to public opinion and hold a fair trial? or do they cave in to Donald Trump and risk being removed from office in November?

JMHO - Too close to call right now.

You're a Democrat partisan hack if you want the Senate to do the House's job.

Pelosi could have subpoenaed anyone she wanted to, and the courts would have given each one due consideration.

Pelosi decided to skip the 3rd Branch of Government and Impeach Trump for acknowledging the Judicial Branch.

And rump would have started at the lowest court, lost, taken it to the next higher court, lost.....rinse, repeat as necessary and 2 years would have gone by before the Supreme Court would have ruled exactly like they did in 1974. Actually, the SC would have not ruled at all since it was already ruled on. Why waste the bother. Now, let the Senate do their thing where there is NO way out in even the courts. If they try and sweep it under the table, the Senate Reps and Rump all look like co-conspirators (which they are) and November isn't very kind to any of them except the deep, deep red areas.

Nancy is playing the Reps like a fiddle on this one.

There's nothing to "sweep under the table," shit for brains. The Dims have no case. They have admitted as much. There's no way out for the Dims.

Sure she is. When DumBama did the same thing, that's what Republicans did, they let the courts settle it. Of course, Republicans believe in doing the right thing, not always trying to cheat the system. The Senate should vote do dismiss based on grounds that the charge is phony, and doesn't rise to the level of impeachment, actually, not even close.

How is calling witnesses fair? The House did not call these people, so why should the Senate? You numbers are indicative of the poor education these people received. Most of them probably don't vote.
They did call these people who refused to testify. Probably because Trump is guilty as sin.
yep, and the next move was to go to the courts and challenge it. Why didn't they? hmmmmmmm

I like to believe that most Americans agree that this should at least look like justice has been served. The form of the trial leaves senators plenty of time to examine their life choices that led to this sorry situation where conservative lawyers will be arguing that abuse of power and obstruction are not impeachable offenses. It's anyone's guess if it will goad any of them to honor their oaths.
You mean like the partisan hit job by the House?
Sucks for Trump all he has in defense is to attack the process like some obviously guilty Mob boss. He is counting entirely on every republican putting him before the party and the country,
Ironic, since you are posting in a thread started on the premise of attacking the process.
I took the OP to be speculation on the open question of how many republican senators will just go along with trying to sweep it all under the rug in spite of the damage it will do to the republican party. The political calculations being done by republicans right now must be a cause of great torment to them. They earned this mess by telling the president he had their unconditional support no matter what.

31 second mark. how many times will you need to see this video before you shut the fk up.

So far no convincing post has been presented by the supporters of trump. I suppose the theory of their defense is that everyone but they and trump are liars. The irony which they will never admit, and likely can't even comprehend, is that lying to mislead the public is daily ritual coming from the White House and the words of The President at rallies, pressers and in tweets.
see my last post #272.

Not like Dems haven't been squirming since Trump won.
This whole affair is in hopes that they can either force Trump out or create enough dislike to make their candidate look better.

To tell the truth I hope that Trump wins a second term, the house and senate go to the Republicans with enough of a lean that no matter what is proposed the Dems don't have enough to shut it down.

Then just for giggles I would love the house to propose to exhonerarte his impeachment just I could watch Pelosi have a stroke.
We already know republicans want a permanent one-party state and an absolute plutocratic ruler.
why did chuckie back in 1999 say the same exact thing the repubs are saying now? hmmmm come on poindexter, answer the question.

Ya gotta ask yer self. Why didn’t the House do it’s fucking job?

The D's have done their job, they had two hearings and presented witnesses and documents necessary and sufficient to hold the Defendant, Donald J. Trump, to answer. They presented all the evidence necessary to impeach The President.

The R's failed to provide any evidence probative to the issues subsequently sent to the Senate. Not one member of the R Caucus presented any witnesses to provide exculpatory evidence, and their cry that they could not bring forth witnesses or documents which were of benefit to the Defendant, those closest to him in the White House, refused the subpoena under the direction of The President.

Time will tell if the evidence presented is so incriminating that even Sen. Graham will fold and vote to convict the Defendant; consider, Senators are Pols and most pols sole concern is what will the voters do, if they don't vote how the majority of their constituents believe.

Most Americans want justice to prevail, notwithstanding the, "lock her up" set.
what's the crime? abuse of power is not a crime, nor is obstruction of congress. so exactly what is the president defending himself from?

Can't name a crime, you must throw it out it's time.

The only one we know for sure is guilty as sin is Joe Biden because he admitted to his crime on videotape in front of the CFR.

Great. Where’s the charges?

He is not in office, therefore not subject to impeachment, dumbass! If he wins and the House goes Republican, just stand-by. The impeachment vote will be taken a few minutes after he gets sworn in.

I thought you said he committed a crime. Where are the criminal charges?

It’s a good question. The next move would have been for Trump’s lawyers to give reason they’re ignoring Congress. They didn’t. Now they have to deal with the consequences.

A President doesn't have to give a reason why he''s using executive privilege. It wouldn't make a difference to the commies anyhow. The only people the President has to give reasons to are the court when challenged.
