maybe Willie can do a few Farm Aid concerts, and chip in -
Trump says US will purchase crops to offset China losses
so how is all that tariff $$$ helping us if Goldilocks takes the long road ?
It helps the farmers... You know, the ones who don't wine and dine lobbyists, the ones who aren't coastal elites, the ones who don't give speeches to Goldman Sachs? Those people, they're also called his base. It's not a complicated strategy... The overall gdp might suffer slightly in the long term, once he comes out with renegotiated terms from the Chinese(as their largest customer, we have the leverage) he'll have a feather in his cap and he'll look compassionate toward the average person. Which is how you win elections.
Jesus... Does this really need to be explained? You add to that the fact it makes his whole "Trump's a bigoted, racist, xenophobe who hates the world poor" narrative look stupid, he's killing 3 birds with one stone. He'd be stupid to not soften the blow of said trade struggles if he's trying to get re-elected. Look, the guy is trying to play the populist card.
He's a billionaire, who's trying to portray himself as relatable, because he knows that gets him support. It doesn't matter if you think it's hokie or not, all that matters is the farmers got a cut. That's it.
Are you familiar with the classical world? How about Julius Caesar? He's not so blatant as to hand out stolen loot from Iraq and Syria like Caesar did Gaul, nor will he appropriate land from sitting congressmen and give it to the poor; but he knows how to garner support in much the same way. People like to feel good about their country, they like to feel like their interests are being looked out for. That's a message that resonates. Not "We're moving to a service based economy, we will make no effort to renegotiate trade deals, and if you don't live in the areas between Boston and DC, or Seattle to SF Bay, learn to code or drop dead".
look at the soy bean chart provided in the link - it tells a better story
Again, you're missing the point. He's softening the immediate blow, there will be an upswing when Xi Jinping no longer has the luxury of posturing the way he has.
They're an export economy, we can afford to hold out on this one, they cannot. Soybean futures will not be enough to change that. It's a lot easier for us to subsidize soybeans temporarily than it is for them to find a customer who allows them the kind of leeway we would, and has the need we have. There a ton of other countries that can make cheap crap for us.
