Not a single Democrat voted for the tax reform package last year because everybody who pays taxes got tax relief. Not just wealthier Americans but everybody who pays taxes with the lion's share of tax relief going to wage earners under $200,000.

How much tax relief did the Democrats offer anybody? None. Yes they want to raise the taxes on the wealthy knowing full well that wealthy Americans would just shelter more of their income to avoid those high taxes. But they would hit American businesses hard which would be passed onto the consumers and make less money available for jobs, wages, and benefits for the average American.

The Republicans are often an ineffective bunch of feckless members of the permanent political class just as the Democrats are. But at least because of the constituency they represent, they are more aware of the effect of taxes on people's behavior and why efforts to hurt the rich invariably hurt the poor more.
