NRA Wants Mentally Ill To Have Gun Rights

It's so sad that the NRA chooses to be part of the problem rather than part of the solution. The NRA wasn't always this way. They were a good outfit up until the late 70's.

After the massacre at Virginia Tech in 2007, Congress did manage to pass a modest measure that was designed to provide money to states to improve the federal background check system. But the N.R.A. secured a broad concession in the legislation, which pushed states to allow people with histories of mental illness to petition to have their gun rights restored.

As a condition of its support for the measure, the National Rifle Association extracted a concession: the inclusion of a mechanism for restoring firearms rights to those who lost them for mental health reasons.

You oppose the right of people to go to court and prove that they aren't actually crazy?

Maybe we should prevent mentally ill people from voting or driving cars forever too.

To own or have access to guns? Once they have a documented mental illness? Yes I do!

Your posts indicate that you have a deep neurosis. Please return your drivers license to the state, It frightens me that you're on the road.

There’s no defense quite like a good offense. But this one relies on a falsehood.

The National Rifle Association, under fire in many quarters for scuttling popular legislation to require near-universal background checks for gun purchases, is embarking on a new campaign to prove that it cares about preventing future shootings. The group is talking up the need to keep firearms away from mentally ill people — a cause that it frequently invokes.

"I'll give you my gun when you pry (or take) it from my cold, dead hands" versus "I'll give you my ballot (without voter ID) when you pry (or take) it from my cold, dead hands"

Has anyone noticed that conservative supporters of the NRA have done a complete reversal when it comes to their argument in favor of voter ID?

Example 1: Why should law abiding gun owners be subject to government regulation suddenly becomes all voters should treated as potential cheaters and subject to voter ID - even though the ratio of convicted impersonators to ballots cast is 1:15 000 000!

Example 2: The Constitution guarantees the "right to bear arms" has been transformed into individual states should have the right to disenfranchise all of those without government ID - despite the fact that the Founding Fathers did not see the need to include such a provision.

Example 3: The possibility of a few individuals committing voter fraud/impersonation is perceived by our conservative "friends" as a greater threat than the approximately 32, 000+ Americans who die from gun shots annually.

Seriously, why would the NRA want the mentally ill to have gun rights?

ummm... if you're able to take a deep breath, I'll tell you...

'k... here's the deal... the NRA wants to have provisions in place for anyone to be able to appeal the removal of their Second Amendment rights... whether it be for a domestic abuse filing... which could unfairly be on the record simply because of a pissed off spouse... or some sort of mental health record... which again could have been initiated by some person with less-than-honorable intentions...

there need to be protections built into the system to protect individuals from the system...
