President declares: Every gun that is made, every warship launched is a theft from the hungry

Yup

And we have ten supercarrier task forces and they have none
We have more nuclear weapons than the rest of the world combined
We have alliances with Germany, France, England, Japan and South Korea and they don't
The development of radar did not make planes obsolete

Whose they? All those alliances you mention work one way only, if our allies are attacked we will defend them. Allied forces contribute nothing to our defense.

They are China and Russia, the only countries capable of engaging us in serious military conflict

Allied forces make us stronger. Did you miss out on WWII?

Maybe you just hadn't noticed, but things change, and faster all the time. How would you assess US military and economic power relative to the rest of the world? Ain't what it used to be, is it.
We are more powerful than at any time in our history and have a lower threat than we have had in 85 years
Your assessment is just short of laughable.

Go for it

You go first .....name a threat today that is worse than the last 85 years and a time we were less powerful

Then I will mock you unceasingly

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population. It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some fifty miles of concrete pavement. We pay for a single fighter plane with a half million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people. This is, I repeat, the best way of life to be found on the road the world has been taking. This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron. … Is there no other way the world may live?

Great speech by a great President

.

LOL....This guy is definitely one of the dumbest posters on the board...Obama likes them stupid...The government creates programs to "help " people. Which employs lots of people, who make lots of money. Whatever is left over, the people targeted for "help" get a little "help" but most of the money is siphoned off by the bureaucracy.

Perhaps we just haven't learned anything from our experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan. I seem to remember that this country had a strategic policy of always being capable of conducting two major campaigns at once, the very foundation of our strategic planning since the Second World War. That policy is no longer an option, our failures in Iraq and Afghanistan have demonstrated for the whole world that the United States is a paper tiger, we can't even handle two minor conflicts at once.
As for the threat, no one has any way of predicting what that threat might be in five or ten years.

The US is proving that military supremacy doesn't mean you can control the world.

You think soldiers are any indication of military strength in modern military warfare?

Well yes... but that's only because there's no other measure of an effective military force.

But did ya want to talk about Ships? Not just down... but pre-WW2 levels, down. Aircraft? You don't even want to know... .

Good god....are you really comparing 1940 ships and aircraft to modern equivalents?

.

We certainly shouldn't do that. On the other hand simply counting up aircraft carriers says very little about our ability to fight an actual war. All our aircraft carriers would be extremely vulnerable in a high threat environment, they would be the first targets for cruise missiles and high speed torpedoes. Our carriers are mostly good for gunboat diplomacy, intimidating the powerless.

No one can, but you can bet others will try in the absence of American power.

The President was right when he said that

All Military expenditures come at a price

war-fear-big-government-macarthur.jpg

When the Soviet Union fell, contrary to the belief system of many, defense spending fell and fell and kept falling.

It wasn't until we were horribly attacked that it went back up.

Hell, in Europe, protected by the powerful United States, average defense spending is from our European allies in NATO is running at 1.6%.

YOu remove immediate threats and First World democratic societies will be happy to spend the money elsewhere.

We have a larger military than the next ten countries combined.....who is the threat?

Other nations seem to understand they can build schools, hospitals and feed their people while we build bigger and better military hardware

Sure they can you dimwit because they expect America to defend them if they ever come under attack so their money can be used on other things besides defense. They feel they don't have to spend on defense, they expect America to defend them.

Jesus your a fucking idiot.
