Religion/ A crutch created by man

Anti-Christian scum. That pretty much sums up why people like you are held in contempt by non-Christians, and, in fact, by many Christians.

Many Christians make known their belief that anyone that does not believe and practice religion as they do are damned. In spite of the fact that many of those they consider damned have led exemplary lives compared to those Christians.

I believe that Ghandi said something like " I like your Christ, it is you Christians that I detest". In other words, all too many claim the mantle of Christ, but live in a manner that Christ would soundly damn. Christ gave one commandment, "Do unto others........". Christians that live by that creed are respected by those around them. As for the other kind of Christian, they are just using the concept for insurance against inevitable death, or social standing. And non-Christians quite justly have little respect for them.

Now waiting to see if Avg-Joe and Derideo_Te will get onto Old Rocks for being 'presumptious'. :) (You know, holding everybody to the same standard and all.)

Must be missing something here, Foxy. Old Rocks made it perfectly clear that there is a distinct difference between those who live their lives in accordance with the teachings in the bible and those who are CINOs (Christians In Name Only) who are doing it purely for the benefit of the "Get-Out-Of-Hell-Free" card that it offers to anyone with a pulse irrespective of what kind of person they are.

Well first he was wrong about Christ giving only one commandment. And second he drew a huge presumption about those who don't practice Chrsitianity as HE deems they are supppsed to practice Christianity. But yes, there is a huge double standard at play here. KG is not allowed to draw any conclusions about non believers--and admittedly she did cast a wide net there though I still don't think that was her intent. But you have no problem with Old Rocks casting just as wide a net to accuse Christians. And I think that WAS his intent.

I'm not close minded. But there are about 1500 threads in this forum of the same crap...personal opinions about why religion is just a rumor of a supreme being made up by a couple of guys who for some reason wanted to be killed in gruesome ways....and how everybody who believes is just not quite as smart as the ones who don't....

It's juvenile, repetitive, and old. You guys have taken over the religion forum with your shallow opinion that religion sucks. Okay, we get it. You don't believe in God. Whoopie. So if you don't believe, why are you compelled to say so..over, and over, and over, and over? And do you really think you're smarter than every single Christian that has ever walked the planet?

Really?????

And why are you compelled to defend religion and try to convert others for the good of their souls?

A very realistic view is that none of us have the neccessary information as to whether a 'Diety' exists or does not exist. And those that state that they are speaking for that "Diety" are all either insane, charatans, or both.

Religious delusions are common symptoms of schizophrenia.

*************
M*W: Scientists have concluded that there is a deeply manifested relationship between religion and schizophrenia. Common symptoms of non-treated schizophrenics include delusions of both spirituality and religiousness. Religious belief delusions vary across cultures. The impact of religion does not always have a positive outcome. In fact, religious delusions may play a part in substance abuse and suicide attempts. Psychiatrists have found that using religion as part of a patient's treatment can often have adverse outcomes.

Researchers studied patients having religious delusions to determine how religious beliefs and practices influenced psychotic illness. They found that religious delusions and hallucinations may lead to violent behavior. Kraya and Patrick found that religious delusions led some patients to commit homicide (1). Field and Waldfogel, et al., along with Waugh in a separate study, found that religiously deluded people have quoted Bible scripture after plucking out one or more eyes (2) or cutting off the testicles (3). Religious delusions about the antichrist have led other patients toward violent behaviors (4).

In a ongoing study by Mohr and Huguelet, their delusional patients who believed they had a close relationship with God, believed that God told them to inflict serious bodily injury to themselves or to others. They found that these same patients heard God's voice telling them to pray, to go to church, to read their Bible, and not to take medication because it hinders their praying and quietens God's voice in their mind (5).

In a study of inpatients with schizophrenia, conducted by Siddle and Haddock, et al., those with religious delusions were the most severely ill with religious delusions that were more frequently observed and lasted for longer periods of time (6).

For their patients with schizophrenia, psychiatrists believe that religion and spirituality cannot be used as tools for ongoing social support as they can lead to a more pathological condition.

To explain away the things they didn't understand.

And for whatever reason even when we started to understand things we didn't give up the crutch.

What men understand of this world was created as a delusion to keep them from knowing their invisible existence.

Hmm. Taken from a website with an unlinked source for the copy and pasted opinion of somebody. Did you check out the Bibliography to see if it was in any way connected to the comments? I'm not gonna bother if you don't mind.

But let's assume she got it right. That means that the more than 90% of people who believe in some form of deity are subject to schizophenia but the less than 10% of people who say they don't believe in any form of god are perfectly healthy mentally?

I wonder if we can get the American Psychiatry Association to agree with that conclusion?

I didn't accuse you of not providing a link. I accused the person you linked us to of not providing a link or any other authority to what she obviously (at least to me) copied and pasted. Any of us can put a bibliography at the end of our post and make it look really official.

I also pointed out the illogic of her thesis in that post in that it would lead one to believe that religion was a huge factor in manifestations of schizophrenia. But having a family member and also a close friend who suffers from this cruel disorder, I'm pretty sure whoever compiled that essay was either desperate to do a dissertation on something or they made it up. Though it is possible that religious delusions appear along with just about everything else one can think of, a comprehensive study of the disease doesn't back up what your link suggested.

If you go to Schizophrenia.com, which I believe is the most reliable, thorough, and comprehensive source for information, and poke around, you'll have a hard time locating any concern about religious influence. If religion is a significant factor in the cause, manifestation, or diagnosis of the condition, they sure seem to be unaware of it.
Schizophrenia.com, Indepth Schizophrenia Information and Support

One interesting thing though is that you can read at this site that for those with the propensity for the disease, a dysfunctional family environment can increase the probability of developing the disease by 86%. Now we might want to look at whether those families who share a religious faith, worship together, and pray together are more or less dysfunctional than those who do not. And Schizophrenia.com sure recommends a lot of support groups who include significant religious faith in their programs.

Furthermore why do Anti-Atheists believe that Atheists don't see humans as "having value" purely on their own merits?
If you peel all the layers back, a true Atheist is a Nihilist and therefore shouldn't see the value in anything or anyone. And I'm talking about lasting, real value--not things like the fleeting value of experiencing something. In the end of ends, to the Atheist/Nihilist, there is no value in anything, anyone, or any of this entire exercise. There can't be. To place value on anyone or anything would be to give them meaning and purpose. At that point, Nihilism and Atheism become Agnosticism... now you're half way to becoming a believer.

???

How in the world do you arrive at that equivalence?

Agnosticism is not a middle ground between theism and atheism. It's a point of view on the provability of assertions about gods and is irrelevant to belief. (ie, you can be a true believer and an agnostic, or an atheist and agnostic)
