I've been saying this for five years, although I would correct you in saying the only solution won't be to go to a government run system, the only widely perceived solution would be to move to that kind of system, which would end up being the biggest boondoggle in American history.

It would have helped, but by far the biggest issue is the delusional expectations of health care consumers - particularly our continuing gullibility in falling for the sales pitch that health insurance makes health care "more affordable" (while it does the opposite). The thing is, that delusion would e self-correcting if not for tax and regulatory policies manipulated to promote more and more insurance coverage, now to the point of mandating it outright.

If health insurance, as it is utilized today, is such a great thing, why not grocery insurance? Let the insurance company pay for your food. How about electricity insurance? How about cable insurance?

Exactly. The reason we got health care "reform" this time is because the health insurance industry's pyramid scam has run its course. Like all ponzi schemes, their's relied on an expanding base of suckers to keep it afloat. Once that dried up, they had no choice* but to turn to government to save their bacon. They were already deeply in bed with state and federal regulators, so cooking up the mandate was a fairly easy ask.

*Of course they did have other choices. They could have faced the reality of a changing market and amortized their losses like honest businessmen. But they've been lobbying Congress too long to remember what "honest business" means.
